Marg, Delhi 110 092 (India), 1996 pp. 475 Rs 450/- Indias Northeast is sadly a
forgotten land. Despite the formation of several new
states and autonomous sub-states, six insurgencies
continue to disturb the tranquillity of the region. The
ethnic crisis has been aggravated by rapid changes in
socioeconomic factors like new value systems, land
alienation by outsider or foreign immigrants,
unemployment etc. The search for creative long-term
solutions are to be found out in a larger regional
setting. This book suggests the way forward.
Northeast went through difficult times since the
partition which put the economies of the region by a
quarter century backwards. High unemployment and other
social problems gave vent in the form of insurgencies
movement, struggles and demands. Unfortunately none of
the problems have been viewed holistically. The tendency
has been to seek ad hoc solutions sectorally or
territorially. The dormant mass has started giving pulls
and pressures. The complexities are obvious and the
opportunities immense. Northeast cannot be relegated to
the status of a distant outpost peripheral to national
concerns.
The study essentially aims to present a macro view of the
Greater Northeast and is concerned with policy issues
which need to be more clearly enunciated, suggesting an
over-arching strategy for safeguarding and enhancing the
future of this rich and fascinating fragment of Mongoloid
India. It seeks to interpret the Northeast to the rest of
India as much as to the rest of the world.
