The American Psychiatric
Association has published practice guidelines for the treatment of patients with
Alzheimers disease and other dementias. (Am J Psychiatry 1997; 154 (suppl): 1-39)
Among the recommendations is a written prescription against driving. Even people with mild
dementia pose a risk if they drive. This is a huge public health issue. It puts physicians
in an awkward role. The guideline makes it easier to reduce the hazard, by encouraging the
physician to write "do not drive"on a prescription pad.
