1-20 MODERATE-INTENSITY EXERCISE
AND SELF-RATED QUALITY OF SLEEP IN OLDER ADULTS
This study was designed to determine the effects of
moderate-intensity exercise training on sleep quality
among healthy, sedentary older adults who reported
moderate sleep complaints.
Followed community volunteers (n=43) aged 50-76. All were
sedentary, but free of cardiovascular disease. Randomized
to: 1)16 weeks of low-impact aerobics and brisk walking 4
times a week for 30 to 40 minutes ( to achieve 60% to 75%
of heart rate based on peak treadmill exercise heart
rate) or 2) a control group.
Compared with controls subjects in the exercise training
program showed significant improvement in an index
assessing quality of sleep, sleep-onset latency and sleep
duration.
