There are many types of Yoga. However, here
we are concerned with physical exercises only.
Yogic kriyas like Kunjal, Shanprakshalan, Neti, Dhauti,
Kapal Bhati, Nauli etc. are processes of purification of
the body which precede Yoga and help in eliminating toxic
accumulations from the body.
Asanas are certain body postures which greatly improve
the blood circulation, tones up the blood vessels and
mainly work on endocrine glands and the nervous system
which are inter-related with other systems. Asanas also
help remove accumulated toxins and metabolic wastes from
the body.
Pranayama increases absorption of oxygen and activates
the vital organs of the system. It also cleans the entire
respiratory system making respiration smooth and
effortless.
Yoganidra or chittashuddhi is a Yogic tranquilliser which
helps achieve total physical, mental and emotional
relaxation.
Naturopathy heals or cures the body , while Yoga
maintains thereafter. The two, in combination, enable one
a healthy life throughout and even at old age.
But, unfortunately, the advocates of one are generally
averse to the other. Naturopaths do accept Yoga in some
areas (though not in full spirit), while Yogis are
generally adamant and consider Yoga as "The be-all
and end-all" , which is a misconception. It is,
however, advisable to follow and have equal faith in both
to get long-term benefits.
Meditation too has made great contribution to good
health. There is absolutely nothing greater than
meditation - a panacea, if practised with absolute
obedience and under the able guidance of a perfect master
( Guru).
In its own humble way, the Institute of Naturopathy and
Yogic Sciences (INYS), Bangalore has been conducting
extensive research on evolving a complete medical system,
utilising Nature Cure,Yoga, Diet and Meditation with
particular emphasis on Asthma, Diabetes, Arthritis and
Hypertension for the last eighteen years with excellent
results. Research has been conducted for the above said
diseases and directed for the benefit of patients.Healing Crisis
Some patients get
perturbed and unnecessarily frightened just by hearing
about or learning of the healing crisis. But what is it,
after all ? Generally, large amounts of toxins and morbid
matter get accumulated in the body following toxic food
/drinks, medicines and drugs taken for a prolonged period
while the patient is undergoing treatment.Sometimes it is
not so easy to drain them out during the normal cleansing
process and the symptoms of the disease get aggravated.
Hence, the patient experiences a healing crisis (acute
manifestation of the symptoms of disease). Frightened by
the crisis some patients lose heart, get frustrated,
abandon the treatment and go back to previous physician
of other medical systems.
This is in fact a blunder. If patients show the
perseverance and the will power, their diseases could be
treated with fantastic results. Even though Naturopaths
could easily suppress this crisis, it would amount to
interference with the cleansing work of the bodys
defensive forces, and hence it is against the philosophy
of Naturopathy.
An example may make it more clear. Suppose, a sewer is
passing through your street and if it is not cleaned for
long, it will stink, even if it is covered with slabs.
But when it is opened for cleaning and the cleansing
process starts, it will surely give rise to such an
offensive smell, that you may feel like running away from
the place lest you catch an infectious disease. However,
when this drain is thoroughly cleaned with lot of fresh
water, and disinfected, the smell will disappear, and the
cleanliness will so transform the place that you will not
possibly hesitate to sit on the slab of that very drain.
So, you can easily understand which part of the whole
process is the healing crisis.
In view of the above , the healing crisis should not be
viewed as a dreadful consequence but as the Natures
effort to overcome the disease. It is the
Naturopaths utmost duty to motivate and educate the
patient during such a crisis and build confidence in him.
