10 Reasons to visit a Gynaecologist

Most Indian women are not aware of gynaecological matters and go for consultancy only when they have problem. In fact many avoid routine check-ups for fear of discovering serious ailments.

Being a woman, a regular check-up should be a crucial part of every woman’s health plan. Here are 10 reasons when it becomes absolutely essential to visit your Gynaecologist:

    • If you are getting married: If you are all set to celebrate your nuptials, you need to see your gynaecologist. This is to answer any queries you may have about sex, pregnancy and contraception.

    • If you have a teenage daughter: This a good time to take your daughter to your gynaecologist. It establishes an early connection between her and the doctor who can assess if her cycles are regular or not.

    • If you feel your daughter is likely to get sexually active: With marriages happening at a later date and with an increasingly casual approach to sex even in Indian society, it would be a wise thing for the girl to visit the doctor who can provide with useful information.

    • If you think you are pregnant: Even if there are medical kits available to confirm pregnancy when you have missed your period, it is best to get an appointment with the doctor and confirm your pregnancy.

    • If you have pelvic pressure or pain: Both theses can be an indication to some abnormalites. Only a doctor can rule those out. Check these out to rule out fibriod tumours, ovarian cysts, or endometriosis.

    • If you have pelvic itching: Itching in the pelvic area and pain can be caused by an infection that needs to be treated. A gynaecologist may even order a pelvic ultrasound to get a diagnosis of the problem.

    • If you have irregular or heavy bleeding: This is a common situation but should not be ignored. It could be due to endometriosis, fibriods or polycystic ovarian disorder.

    • If you have continous pain during/after intercourse: Painful intercourse can indicate cervical/vaginal problems or can indicate bacterial infections. Your doctor may do a physical examination and if required will also do a pap smear.

    • If you have pain in the breast or a palpable lump: Regular self examination of your breasts is recommended and if you feel a lump or experience pain, you should see your gynaecologist. After proper examination, your doctor will decide for a mammogram to view any breast abnormality.

    • If your yearly preventive care check-up is due: Prevention is always better than cure. So, an annual visit to your gynaecologist, especially after a particular age or if you have a family history of cancer etc can help in detecting them early. The check-up would include a breast examination, pelvic examination and a pap smear.
